Mark Lepper

Limiting Options

Today there is another interesting research to share with you. This study was conducted by social scientists Sheena Lyengar and Mark Lepper.

This one was done at a grocery store in California. During the first week, they managed to have a booth which provided jam testers. There were total of 24 types of jam available.

The following week, the strategy was slightly changed. The selection of testers was limited to only 6 types. Amazingly, sales went up by 900% !.

The summary of this study was that it is nice to have selection. However, selections should always be limited.

If number of selection is too high, it is likely that customer might end up not selecting at all. If number of selection is appropriate, it will surely help stimulate sales significantly.

Let me summarize and add up some comments here, so that you could apply to your selling more effectively.

1) No one likes being sold.

2) But everyone likes having choices.

3) Let’s emphasize again that too many choices will do more harm than good.

4) Tester or demo always work, especially if selling point is at the same location.

Try to find out how giving selections could be applied to your selling.

It will not always be certain about the most appropriate number of choices. Surely, it varies depending on circumstances.

The best way for you is to do the real testing as what had been done in the examples above.
